20 Favorite Android Apps


While I’m actually over-due for an update, one of the coolest things about an Android phone getting out of warranty is the new-found freedom to enjoy rooting and applying custom ROMS (software versions).
While HTC provided the upgrades from the version of Android known as “Froyo” to “Gingerbread” and then (surprisingly) to “Honeycomb”… the simple fact is that the hardware is really not fast enough for more current versions of Android. 
That however didn’t stop the Android community from making it happen anyways! While the community never successfully got “Ice Cream Sandwich” working on the Dinc, recently a very solid working beta of the newest version, “Jelly Bean”, was released for DInc! 
While admittedly, this is such a hardware stretch for this phone that it’s sluggish… flashing the ROM gave me a great excuse to identify which apps I currently depend on and to share them with you!

Here’s the FIRST 20 Android Apps that I installed on My Phone
(After I Wiped It To Flash The ROM) 

1. AroundMe - Quickly identifies gas stations, grocery stores and more nearby. Highly useful when out of town traveling. (Your Android may already have a similar app.)
2. Audible - Audiobooks… because business success starts with personal development between your ears. 
3. Beautiful Widgets & Beautiful Widgets Weather Animations - The stock (rooted) android skin has very boring date/time/weather widgets.
These fix that issue. If you have a ROM provided by the phone manufacture you likely will not need these. 
4. cVolume Lite - Lets me easily micro-manage volume levels and set notification volume separate from incoming call volume. 
5. Dolphin Browser - Absolutely my favorite Android browser. 
6. Facebook - While I actually use Dolphin to manage my page, it kinda goes without saying that sometimes the app is handy to have. 
7. Flashlight - Necessary only because I’m on a stock rooted ROM that lacks a flashlight app provided. 
8. Gmail - I use IMAP to bring my mail into Gmail and then I use this app to quickly check mail from my phone. 
9. Go SMS Pro - My favorite SMS client. I left Handcent (also good) in favor of this one recently. 
10. Google+ - Yup!
11. Kitchen Timer - While Android has a great alarm system, it lacks a short-action timer. This handy little app is small and easy to use.
12. LastPass & LastPass For Dolphin - Because LastPass is one of the best ways to help you manage your passwords online and I pay for the mobile upgrade. The Dolphin integration is really good. 
13. Pandora - My favorite streaming music app. 
14. Pocket Casts & Presto Sound Library - My favorite podcast app. The sound library lets me play the podcasts at faster and slower speeds. 
15. ROM Toolbox Pro (requires root) – This app keeps getting better and better. 
16. Screen Filter - Lets me not only easily dim my screen for night use but also turn off the lights on my physical buttons. 
17. Sophos Mobile Security - Get this… you need security. 
18. SlideIT Keyboard - Absolutely my favorite keyboard. This is one of the first apps I install! At this point, I can’t live without it. Dragon Naturally Speaking has a similar keyboard but it’s not as responsive. 
19. SoundHound Pro - The music lover in me sometimes REALLY must know what the title is of that song playing on the radio at the resturant, grocery store, etc. 
20.TapeMachine - While not essential for most people, I use this to record high quality .wav files for my podcasts on the go. Then I either edit them locally or send them to DropBox to edit from my PC. 


While a few of the apps above require rooting or are only needed because my phone is on a custom ROM… most of them will be excellent for any Android device!
While the Samsung Galaxy S3 rocks, I find the size of it too big for comfort in hands…
